I truly am a geek. It’s not just a cute name. Since my Commodore 64 at age five, I’ve been hooked on technology. I love to build things and take them apart. I love improving processes and tweaking things to squeeze out every drop of functionality and efficiency. I love to read, solve puzzles, play with gadgets, and explore new things. I’m also a huge klutz.

I spent the first 23 years of my life in the Toronto area — Mississauga, Oakville, and downtown Toronto itself. I went to a private school (Fern Hill) until grade eight, then Oakville Trafalgar H.S. and T.L.Kennedy S.S. In 2001 I received a full scholarship to Ryerson University and recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in information technology management (co-op), with a focus in digital media and marketing. It’s basically a blend of comp. sci. and business management. Totally my thing :) I’m all about the bridge between technology and people.

I’ll be applying for grad school next year to continue researching my interests. In the tech world, the areas that turn my crank the most are:

• ubiquitous computing
• GPS/location tracking
• RFID/asset tracking
• social networking
• internet enabled cameras (webcams, network cameras, etc.)
• wearable computing
• home automation
• blogging & moblogging
• mobile & ambient devices (like how you can talk to me through my Nabaztag! [username: stephthegeek])
• life logging
• home entertainment PCs/home networking

I also wear the hat of musician and artist. I independently recorded and released my first album, Not A Victim, in 2003 and am working on #2. I sing (also have a classical/choral background) and play the piano (self-taught). Another big creative passion is bellydance. I’m still a student, but it’s something I will continue to seriously pursue. Other loves… good food, books, true crime, redheads, pets (one kitty right now named Zoe), and baths.

I moved to California in 2006 and married love of my life, Chris, who came here from Wisconsin. Sounds like a big leap, but given my desire to experience a new place and interest in San Francisco/Silicon Valley, and the fact that he has family here, it seemed like meeting in the middle :) We live in a huge, cheap live/work space in an industrial area of Oakland.
