Porn with personality, an emerging genre

February 4th, 2007 by Stephanie

In looking for other girls/sites to feature here on SexyGeekGirl, I’ve had to really think about the keywords and genres used in the adult industry. There are a lot of phrases that get tossed around, and some of them capture part of the element I’m talking about here, but one has emerged as the clear winner — personality-based porn.

I’ll be writing more about coming to that conclusion, but it really hit home last night when I realized just how much personality-based porn crosses other genres. It’s not an aesthetic niche, it’s a philosophy.

So I was checking out the sites of two girls I enjoy, Apnea and Adorable Audrey, who are at first glance are quite different from each other…

Apneatic — goth porn or personality?Adorable Audrey — amateur or personality?

But are these two girls actually in the same genre?

I realized that there’s something appealing about them that transcends the aesthetic. And it dawned on me when reading Apnea’s about page:

“I used to model for fun with my husband back in 2003. I would do silly stuff like run around his house posing with pineapples and stuffed animals. Eventually we started experimenting with nude and erotic photography. I had never planned to be a model…”

But it’s not written in that “webmaster promotional copy” voice. Her site, photographs, and brand are more based on personality than appearance. Her site oozes authenticity, from the journal to the frank personal statements and variety of photography that she clearly enjoys. I love her site because it’s really her, and in this case, “her” is a tattooed, gothic, bondage aficionado.  And the same goes for Audrey, as a very different character.  Self-run website, independent, passionate, intelligent, and it shows.

There’s something about personality sites that corporation-created websites, despite trying to emulate the elements, cannot capture.

So, despite two sites that one might immediately lump into categories of “goth” or “bondage” or “art nudes” vs. “amateur” or “curvy” or “housewife”, I say they belong together in this happy genre I am proud to be promoting — porn with personality!

I’ve been wrestling with this same question and I think the only reason that the two sites you name would be put in the same category is because historically there have been so few sites outside the mainstream. However, I think the increased number of them now will allow for more segmentation of the genre which I think will be a good thing. What you’ve really hit on in your post though is the term “personality porn” which I would love to catch on. Everyone has their personal likes and dislikes that they find sexy. I am generally not into a lot of tattoos, but like anyone you might meet in real life, what’s underneath is what ends up being the real turn on. I think people who watch porn have become a lot more sophisticated or at least a much more varied group. People want to be turned on with their brains as much as they are with their private bits, at least that’s the case for me. My favorite site for years was izzicam.com, run by a young woman who was shy, smart, and damn sexy! It’s too bad there aren’t more sites out there like hers…and yours. That’s my $0.02 anyway.

Izzi! Yes, I was a fan of hers as well.

I completely agree that the consumers are evolving. But the unfortunate thing is that regulations are being put into place that keep shoving down the independent producers. And this is right at a time when technological and usability advances should be flourishing and making it *easier* for people to create their own sites.

I’m going to do my part to push it as a genre. “Solo girl” or “amateur” just doesn’t capture it anymore. The good news is that I’m seeing more girls emphasizing the word ‘personality’ on their own sites :)

Glad you like the site too!

I had forgotten about all the regulations that have been evolving along with consumers, although that’s probably because it’s a daily reality for you more than it is for me. You are right when you say it should be easier to start up independent sites and it sucks that such isn’t the case. But you keep fighting the good the fight girl! And I’ll do my part too which is to sign up for your site right now and fight the power! It’s not just porn…it’s porn with personality! ;)

what are we actually doing here?

now that we’re back up and running for nearly a week, i came to the conclusion that although everything is running well and traffic increases on a day-by-day basis, i still have no idea what kiki and i are actually doing here. it’s porn, b…
